We care. We teach.
We Make Change.
What We Do.
In The Green Sleep Project, we believe that climate change is an eminent threat which needs global attention, that is why we empower youth to tackle environmental issues such as plastic pollution through scientific/artistic exploration, advocacy, and environmental education.
From Where It Started
A Middle-School Project
The Green Sleep Project started as an idea for a middle school project. The initial aim was to reduce plastic pollution by reusing plastic bags and crocheting them into sleeping mats for the homeless
The very first mat was donated to Dorothy Day Hospitality House. Although creating plastic bag sleeping mats remains our staple and most popular project, we have expanded to encompass not only different matting styles, but also the pillar of environmental education. Our program also encompasses the Environmental Science Exploration/Arts Initiative, where students either explore (micro)plastic pollution in their local environments (later presenting their findings) or create a piece of art advocating for environmental justice.
Our Mission
Our biggest aspiration is to inspire youth to take a stand against environmental injustice and the consequences of plastic pollution. We believe that the globe belongs to all who live in it, and therefore it is our responsibility to protect our decreasing biodiversity. The thought that fuels our work: Global Change Starts Locally.
We believe that youth have the potential and determination to make change in their world; work towards a brighter, cleaner future for all. Unaffected by the greed of wealth, they are able to recognize the drastic changes within our environment and advocate for a better future.
We not only reduce plastic pollution by aiding those affected by homelessness, but we also collaborate with schools to educate the next generation on climate change and eco-friendly practices through hands on activities. Our goal is to help the youth find their voice in an attempt to save their future and undo the mistakes of the previous generation(s). Our passion of environmental advocacy and education also shines through our (upcoming) blog.
The Green Sleep Project aims to mobilize today's youth for the hope of a better tomorrow.
